Critical Mass Cycling in Tel Aviv + Bike Rental Stations

Come out this Friday (1.28.11) to support cycling in Tel Aviv by joining the critical mass ride that starts from Kikar Rabin at 13:30. The rides take place on the last Friday of every month.

The first signs of the bike rental stations have started to pop up around town. Smaller stations will have about 10 bikes each while central locations such as by the Municipality will have about 1500 bikes.

The project will kick off in April with about 50 stations with another 25 to be added by July. By year's end there should be 150 stations total. Residents will pay 240 NIS for an annual membership while tourists or non residents can sign up for a 60 NIS two week membership. There’s also a $10 daily rental. Each user will be identified by a smart card. Hopefully the cycling infrastructure will also improve and will be used only by bikes and not pedestrians or motorcycles.

About helmets – The Helmet Law is up for approval in March and will probably pass. Those adults who were concerned about “helmet hair” won’t have to worry. Only minors will be required to wear helmets according to the new law. (T in Tel Aviv strongly urges all riders regardless of their age to wear a helmet!)
