Kosher for Passover Restaurants in Tel Aviv

There are a handful of kosher for Passover restaurants in Tel Aviv. The Café Café chain has three branches that are kosher for Passover – Ibn Gvirol, Ben Yehuda and Kikar Hamedina. Café Joe in the Azrieli Mall is kosher for Passover as is Badolina in the Tel Aviv Port. One of T in Tel Aviv’s favorite restaurants throughout the year (and that happens to be kosher) will also be kosher for Passover – Bariba. Located next to Max Brenner on the northern end of the Tel Aviv Port, Bariba always offers an interesting and innovative menu. Highly recommend it!

Wine and More at Jessy Bodec

Sommelier Jessy Bodec founded a wine tasting school and consulting firm in 2002 in order to promote wine culture in Israel. In honor of Passover (which starts on the 29th) there will be a special wine sale at the Jessy Bodec complex located a Eliphelet (corner of Eilat Street) in S. Tel Aviv.

The best wines from Israel (and from abroad) will be available for tasting and purchase at special prices. Not to mention music, art and cheese too!

Wine prices on the Jessy Bodec website are quite good. The Merlot Reserve 2006 Flam Winery runs 124 NIS while the Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Saslove Winery is 88 NIS.

Finding the Perfect Gift….Present Simple

It’s never easy finding gifts that are original. T in Tel Aviv came across the Israeli gift site Present Simple and was amazed to find the selection offered. What’s nice about the site is that you can search for gifts by occasion, type of gift or by recipient.

I searched under “housewarming gifts” and found a neat clock whose face is an Old Jaffa Street map. Under “green gifts” I found a sun powered cell phone charger. There’s also a nice selection of gifts for “youth” (think: Bar and Bat Mitzvah gift challenge!) Present Simple also carries the very trendy Paper Blank diaries.

The company takes order for delivery in Israel. Present Simple also ships overseas but on non “blue and white” items it’s not worth it.

Unfortunately the Present Simple website is in Hebrew only but you can reach them by phone or e mail. From outside of Israel - 972-9-740-0646. Customer service inside Israel is 1-700-700-840.

Another Gadget That You Can’t Live Without – The Egg Cuber

You may recall T in Tel Aviv’s post about the advantages of the square watermelon including maximizing storage/display space.

I can’t think of any advantage to having a square egg but if you can there’s now a great way to create a square egg. The Egg Cuber.

Above, Egg Cuber Instructional Video

For regular shaped eggs there's always Benedict in Tel Aviv for breakfast!

The Gap Comes to Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv now has a Gap store. What else can one ask for? (Well, lets see…..)

The new store is located on the 1st floor of the Azrieli Center right off the Ayalon Freeway. T in Tel Aviv expected that the store would be in the middle of mall but instead found it hidden at the end of the one appendages. The store has a women’s, men’s, kid’s and baby department but none of them is especially large.

A price check on a few items found that a pair of plaid boy's shorts cost 129 shekels ($34) vs. $27 on Gap.com, women’s mid rise skinny women’s jeans are 349 shekels ($92) vs. $69.50 on Gap.com and women’s polo shirts are 89 shekels ($23) vs. $24.50 on Gap.com.

What’s more interesting is what ISN’T available in the Tel Aviv Gap store. Other than a few pairs of cargo pants the women’s department was lacking pants other than jeans. The kid’s department didn’t have boy’s “dress” pants such as khakis or blue chinos and NO kid’s button down dress shirts. This is clearly a reflection of how Israeli kids “dress up”. Also missing in the store are underwear and socks. (saw only a few pairs in the kid’s department) Trying to be as positive as I can but there are no longs or ankle lengths in the women’s department and virtutally NO inventory in size 12 and up in the kid’s department.

The bottom line – the Gap is here but at a premium and not for everything.

I LOVE CUPCAKES…opens in Tel Aviv

A few months ago both the Hebrew and English press in Israel wrote about the cupcake craze coming our way. Until now all of the purchase points were virtual. As of February 19th you can now buy cupcakes at I Love Cupcakes’ retail shop at 144 Ben Yehuda in Tel Aviv.

Founded by new immigrants – Hayley Rabie from South Africa and Danielle Levy from the U.K – I Love Cupcakes’ shop is bright and cheery. The cupcakes are made on the spot and hand decorated. T in Tel Aviv tasted a vanilla cupcake with a cappuccino frosting. The review: The cake part is not as light as it could be but the more than ample frosting is delicious AND very rich. . Some additional flavors displayed were chocolate with an Oreo on top, vanilla with chocolate frosting and chocolate with chocolate frosting topped with a fresh strawberry.

At 15 NIS a pop the cupcakes are on the small side. The frosting helps though. T in Tel Aviv had a sugar buzz for a good 2 hours after devouring a cupcake. There are quantity deals if you buy 10 or 20 cupcakes at once. And....there's a cupcake/coffee combo for 20NIS.
