Yellow + Blue = Green (Wine)

Wine lovers can now drink their wine and save the planet at the same time! Yellow + Blue Wines currently offers four organically grown wines available in 1 liter Tetra Paks which are made of 75% paper harvested from responsibly harvested forests. Tetra Paks hold 1 liter so you are getting two glasses more than in a 750 ml glass bottle.

And what about the wines? T in Tel Aviv hasn’t tasted them but The Wine Curmudgeon writes, “Yellow + Blue is a $10 Hall of Fame candidate that delivers more than $10 worth of wine. It has well-dibe tabbusm something that’s rare in cheap Malbec, and the fruit isn’t so over the top that it covers everything else up….”. Food and Wine Magazine writes, “Inviting blackberry fruit and a peppery finish are the hallmarks of this eco-friendly Malbec, which is grown organically and packaged in low-carabon footprint one liter Tetra Paks”.

The wines are available all over the U.S. including Venakado and Monsieur Marcel in Los Angeles, Wine Geeks in Armonk and Cabrini Wines in New York City. (Please advise if you find boxed wine in Israel!)

Meanwhile, as college students head back to their dorms let us pay homage to the 5 liter boxes of Almaden and 3 liter boxes of Blue Nun Riesling.

Julie & Julia in Israel

T in Tel Aviv is reading the book and loving it. Unfortunately this foodie did not get a chance to see the film before leaving U.S. soil and the film won’t open until mid-October in Israel. My well worn copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking sits proudly on my library shelf and was just joined by the new 40th Anniversary Edition (thank you K.F.R).

However…there is a way to see "Julie & Julia" NEXT WEEK here in Israel! Noted Israeli cookbook writer, humorist and (very) entertaining person Tami Sirkis , in cooperation with the Rav Chen cinema chain, is hosting “Morning at the Movies”. Light refreshments will be served at 10:00, Tami will speak (in Hebrew) at 10:30 and the film shown at 11:15. There are 4 screenings scheduled (one each) in Rehovot on the 23rd, in Kiryat Ono on the 24th, Givatayim on the 25th and Herzliya on the 26th. Tickets can be ordered in advance for 49 NIS or purchased at the box offices for 45 NIS.

Seems that most foodies have a Julia Child story to share whether it be their personal cooking experience (Caneton a’ l’Orange for T in Tel Aviv), Dan Aykroyd’s parody of Julia on Saturday Night Live, or Rob Eshman post on the Los Angeles Jewish Journal’s Foodaism blog entitled “Rob and Julia”.

Bon Appetit!

Stovetop Waffle Pan

A few months ago the weekly Williams Sonoma e mail newsletter advertised a stovetop non stick mini waffle pan . My friend Patti of Tchochkes also received the e mail and both of us were thinking this is another gotta have gadget.

Last week, T in Tel Aviv returned from vacationing in the U.S. with a new mini waffle pan from Williams Sonoma. It didn’t take long for the young Tel Avivian (remember him from earlier posts?) to get his first dose of stovetop waffles. This is a GREAT pan! It works! No sticking and easy clean up!!! What a pleasure not to have to wait for the orange light to come on!! Even better is not having to use a transformer since the pan doesn't use electricity! The key is not to overfill each waffle slot with batter.

On my flight to Tel Aviv I was reading O Magazine and sure enough there are other stovetop waffle pans on the market. Available from JCPenney my favorite is the pan featuring 7 different faces rather than the traditional waffle pattern.

Brezel in Tel Aviv

"Pretzel" is the Americanized spelling of "brezel" the delicious pretzels of Bavaria. Now you can enjoy a warm brezel at Brezel here in Tel Aviv (Dizengoff 165, south of Ben Gurion).

There are plain, chocolate coated, mascarpone – Nutella, caramelized almonds and vanilla glazed brezels to name a few (13-16 shekels). For more of a meal Brezel offers brezel sandwiches with Emmenthal cheese, brie, Roquefort and apple marmalade plus others with various meats. (24-28 shekels) (NOT KOSHER)

Seating is limited with a few stools at the counter. Bring your own yellow mustard!
