The World of Cheeses – Great Cheeses in Tel Aviv's Carmel Market

The Shavuot holiday will be celebrated later this week. The cuisine mantra for Shavuot is: dairy dairy dairy.

Imported cheese can be very pricey in Israel and although Israeli cheeses are truly wonderful there are times when you want something different. Located in the outdoor Carmel Market, The World of Cheeses is the place to go for your cheese needs. The prices are lower than some of the better known cheese shops in Tel Aviv – French Roquefort cheese is 24.90 NIS per 100 grams and Spanish Manchego is 9.90 NIS per 100 grams. .

T in Tel Aviv particularly enjoys buying from Avi (pictured) below. He knows his cheeses! The World of Cheeses is located at 34 Carmel and is on the south end (parking lot side) of the market on the east side of the center aisle.

Here’s a recipe from Wholefoods.com that makes good use of Manchego cheese. Enjoy!

Arugula Salad with Manchego and Walnuts

Ingredients:
1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts

1 1/2 tablespoons Champagne vinegar (or white wine vinegar)

3 tablespoons walnut oil (or double the olive oil if you don't have walnut oil)

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Sea salt, to taste Ground black pepper, to taste

8 cups arugula, stems removed

1/4 cup shaved aged Manchego cheese

Thinly sliced red onion (optional)

Toast walnuts in a dry skillet over low heat until fragrant and lightly browned. Whisk together vinegar, walnut oil, olive oil, salt and pepper. Arrange arugula, walnuts, Manchego and onion on serving plates; drizzle with vinaigrette and serve.

Bravo Tel Aviv….

Actually it’s “Viva Tel Aviv” in the June issue of Conde Nast Traveler on Concierge.com . Writer Adam LeBor writes how Tel Aviv has become a “phenomenon of hyperactive Medierrean style.” T in Tel Aviv felt energized just reading the piece.

Tel Aviv as seen from Old Jaffa

Of course it’s impossible to mention all of the great restaurants, hotels and hangouts in Tel Aviv in one article but LeBor agrees with some of T in Tel Aviv’s choices of favorite restaurants in the White City. Manta Ray, Suzanna and Orna and Ella made the list as did the yet to be tried Yafa CafĂ© on Yehuda Margoza St.. Mul Yam in the Tel Aviv Port also made the list but T in Tel Aviv says way to pricey considering the many other options available.

If you've never been to Tel Aviv this is a great introduction to the city and past visitors will enjoy LeBor's take on our city.

IsraelVintage - 100% Israeli Made T-Shirts

If you are an avid T shirt fan like T in Tel Aviv then you know that a T shirt is just not any shirt. Working with a number of handpicked Israeli designers, Israel Vintage founder Oren Neiger’s T shirts are a 100% Israel made product and VERY comfortable. T shirt wearers will appreciate the soft fabric and cut of the shirts.

Many of the graphics are contemporary takes on vintage Israel products such as Zebra toothpaste! (remember the stripes???) What Israeli child (or adult for that matter) doesn’t dream of a nice cool “artik” (ice cream popsicle) in the summer?

A new collection is now available from Israel Vintage and features shirts produced in honor of Tel Aviv’s 100th. (pictured below)

Israel Vintage products are also available in Tel Aviv at the Bauhaus Center at 155 Dizengoff, Amen at Bograshov 60, Sunset at Hayarkon 59 and at Shenkin 39. For t shirt devotees outside of Israel, Israel Vintage does ship worldwide.

Green Fresh Garlic is in Season

You know that winter has come to an end when fresh green garlic appears in the open air markets. The green steamed garlic is simply garlic that has been harvested before its time. The cloves are milder tasting and smaller than dried garlic but no doubt about it, green garlic smells like garlic. This is good.

Use fresh garlic as you would dried garlic. The green stalks can be finely chopped and added to cream cheese or ricotta and served as a spread. The health benefits of garlic are vast so head into the kitchen and start chopping garlic.
