The Boydem

A new Israeli website/project (Hebrew only) is now up and running – The Boydem

"Boydem" in Hebrew means "attic"….as in the place where you put all that stuff that you might need (or not need) someday. The site's purpose is to make available to the public home movie footage that shows life in Israel between the 1930's – 1970's.

The first stage of the project will feature hundreds of home movies from 90 families throughout Israel. The films show family and historical events that typified Israeli society during the period.

The clips are divided by family name and represent a true cross cultural view of Israel. The collection of the Speiro Family includes footage taken on the boat that brought Norman Speiro from South Africa and his arrival with 20 friends to the newly established State of Israel.

The site is in Hebrew but non-Hebrew speakers can click on any of the video clips and enjoy a quick nostalgic view of Israeli life. Also caught on film are heads of the new Jewish state such as David Ben Gurion (pictured below) and Moshe Sharett leaving the Great Synagogue on Allenby Street in Tel Aviv.

Also on the site is the collection of the Saltzman family from Nes Tziona (near Rehovot). Nissan Saltzman, who shot the footage settled in Nes Tziona in 1924 and is shown with his big purchase - the first car in his town.

The Boydem is asking for people to send them their home movies…they'll even take care of digitizing them. The Boydem can be reached via e mail: boydem@nana10.net.il

The site is in its early stages but as more clips are added The Boydem will become a site to visit frequently. Lesson Learned: Never Throw Anything Away!!!
